The Eyre Affair is a book written by Jasper Fforde about a detective by the name of Thursday Next in the branch SO-27: the LiteraTecs. The LiteraTecs solve crimes related to literature. One subplot in the story is encounters with Thursday’s dad. Thursday’s dad is a former agent of the ChronoGuard (they protect time and space) who went rogue and now can only visit Thursday with time completely halted. Thursday and her dad have a few adventures in the book which further develops Thursday’s backstory and shows her way of thinking. Another Subplot is with Spike, an agent of SO-27 (they defend against ghosts and supreme evil beings). This subplot further shows Thursday’s problem solving skills and gives Thursday the silver bullet needed to kill Hades. A third subplot is with her ex-fiancé Landen and how he shows up trying to get her back. This helps develop Thursday’s backstory and in the end is resolved when they eventually get married. That shows Thursday’s compassion and willingness to forgive.
