“The Facebook Sonnet” The number of social media users increases dramatically each year. Popular social medias like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are used to connect and share important events with family and friends. Although people find social media beneficial, it can turn into an ignomying place if used the improper way or it can also cause isolation from the real world. In “The Facebook Sonnet”, by Sherman Alexie, the poet’s motive is to illustrate the negatives of using social media through conversational diction, real life parallels, and a modern twist in a classic sonnet. The use of conversational diction in the poem creates a unique mood for the reader to feel comfortable. It’s as if the poem was reading itself to reader or even better, the poem speaking back at the reader expressing its emotion. In “The Facebook Sonnet”, the poet uses conversational diction to make it easier for the reader to understand the message the poet is trying to present about social media being a powerful distraction. The poet is emphasizing the same idea over and over to prove its point. The poem is making a strong connection as to why facebook can become a serious matter to some users. It’s an online world to connect with everyone in the past, “kind or cruel” just like mentioned in lines 2-4. Its a social media where its facile to destroy someone’s life or relationship and to lower one’s standards. In line 7-8, “ Lets exhume and extend childhood.” means that by using facebook it’s like trying to make an effort to forget about the present and to focus on past instead because the present isn’t important enough.
