1. Factors that I think contribute to the U.S household wasting so much food is the “sell by”, “best before”, “used by”, or “expiration” dates. The U.S is used to having so much food and having it readily available to them whenever they need it, that at times, they just throw things away. These dates are stimulating consumers to throw away food that is still good. The consumers are not aware that these dates are speaking in terms of the quality and not to the safety of these perfectly good food. In addition, the date makes people worry and that alone is a lot of food being wasted. Many households see that the food has changed color and involuntarily go and throw it out, assuming that it is not longer decent. They are unaware, that often times, the food is still perfectly edible and good. In addition, consumers may worry that the food was not stored properly and it had spoiled or they think had spoiled. Families may be cooking too much food and not being able to finish it all and so it goes into the refrigerator for the next day. However, the majority of the food that goes into the refrigerator ends up in there for days at a time and they forget about it or no one eats it, and it just ends up in the trash. I would say that my food choice surely affects my environment and planet. My family loves to eat fish and recently I have read that over the past several decades, they are moving family fishing companies into industrial fishing establishments that are owned by big commercial companies that have little to no care for the environment. They are overfishing and may not think about all the other species in the water. Producing foods includes the water used to grow the fruit. It also involves the fertilizer and chemicals that help fight the pesticides for the fruits and vegetables to grow big and juicy. Moreover, we cannot forget about the gasoline that powers the big trucks to haul the fresh fruits and vegetables to supermarket. My food choice like becoming a kale lover or acai supporter made lead my community, state, and country to fall short of that item. Trendy super foods like that can make other people also jump on the bandwagon and want to purchase that food item, making the demand and availably for that become less. Moreover, grocery markets around my neighborhood may need to start getting that item since the demand is high and it may come out short since it is a trendy super
