The Fall of the Glorious Ideas of Self Reliance
The Juche ideology was once a unique brand of Marxist-Leninism created by the true leader of Korea: Kim il Sung. Recently, however, the tyrannic rule of Kim il’s successors adulterated the purity of the Juche thought. This revision of the Juche ideals has shifted the public image of Juche, vilifying it and shadowing the history of this great form of societal expression. In 1932, while attending a young Communists meeting in Korea, Kim il formulated the idea of a state-centric, personal form of Marxist-Leninist Socialism. Juche’s concepts called for self dependence, and with a community working together with this idea, a pure socialist society could be formed. This is supported by the publishing of the 1982 manifesto: On the Juche Idea. This book marked the beginning of the shift from the respectable admiration for Kim il, to the zealous worship of his figure. It also supported the ability to change the government into a totalitarian state, where the president could control anything with no opposition. The most damning of these changes was the shift from Communist thought. The removal of Communism created a beast that cannot be quelled, no matter how strong an ideology is. Kim Jong il’s rule and interpretation of the Juche thought quickly destroyed the people’s state that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was once destined to become. The rule of Korean despots has turned the DPRK into a monster of laughable quality, despite the fair and laudable idea it was once based on. However perhaps this can change. The original Juche thought gained support by a variety of important figures; including Chairman Mao of the People’s Republic of China, Josef Stalin, the leader United Soviet Socialist Republic, and even Syngman Rhee, South Korea’s first president. These leaders shared an admiration of Juche that perhaps one day the DPRK can return to, and unite the people under a pure Communist
