One word used to describe Jeannette and the Walls family is Resilient. Being able to recover from rock bottom to a status more respectable is incredible. It seems hard to believe that after being raised in the eyes of Rex and Rosemary Walls, that both Jeannette and Brian left behind their parents lifestyle and sprouted into the great human beings that are today. Although the family struggles to overcome obstacles, siblings relationships, such as Jeannette and Brian’s in The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, ultimately hold the family together and positively influence the children to successfully leave the lifestyle Rex and Rosemary have chosen.

Inside the Walls home, some occasions were always tough yet others extremely tough, Jeannette deemed that, “Stuffing some food into the purse for Brian”(173). Both of the older sisters planned to leave for NYC as soon as possible, all the money acquired was saved up as an escape bank. “It would be their joint fund” (223). After Lori graduated, Jeannette showed her unselfishness side by giving all of her saved up escape bank money to Lori and send her to NYC. When their savings ran out Jeannette gives Lori the spark they needed. Somewhere in Iowa Jeannette was given a certain summer job but she did not accept but decided to give it to Lori trying to keep a promise that they would meet in NYC. “Please accept my sister Lori instead of myself, and at termination, buy her a bus ticket to NYC” (230). Jeannette had a mind set ready to arrive in NYC. When the day came “Brian would break the ice in the Walls home by declaring that in seven hours Jeannette is going to be exiting Welch” (240). Jeannette's benevolence gave her the power to complete her escape from Welch, and her family's broken down home.
