Thomas Jefferson became a delegate to the second continental congress in 1776. At the time, Jefferson was thirty-three years old, making him the youngest member of the congress. The congress arranged for a five-person committee to write a document to explain why the colonies deserve freedom. This document is now known as the declaration of independence.
