The Finch family is the main family in the book, “To Kill A Mockingbird”. There are 3 related members of the family and one general housemaid. The family is made up of Atticus (the father), Jem (the oldest), Scout (the youngest), and Calpurnia (the housemaid). The finch family are seen as one of the rich families during this time period. Atticus is one of the few people that has a job during this time. He is an attorney for the town of Maycomb. During the Great Depression very few people had jobs, which means that they couldn’t supply for their families. The Finches on the other hand, can supply 3 meals a day, have clothes for their children, and are able to supply Calpurnia with a paycheck. “The idea was profound, but as usual, in Maycomb it didn’t work very well. …show more content…

The rural children who could, usually brought clippings from what they called The Grit Paper, a publication spurious in the eyes of Miss Gates, our teacher.” (Lee, 327). This quote is talking about how very few children have the money/opportunity to get things like the newspaper or clothes, things like that. “In many economically deprived families, children suffered from malnutrition and inadequate clothing.” This quote is from encyclopedia.com. The Finch family had the total opposite of what this quote is talking about. Kids starving and not having enough clothes is what most of the families went through during the Great Depression, the Finch family is one of the few families that is able to keep a stable household. Scout and Jem had the privilege to go to school. Scout had to go with Walter Cunningham which means that the school is not that expensive but Scout is still getting an
