When the nuclei of Uranium-235 and Plutonium-239 undergo nuclear fission, they produce waste as a by-product, which is known as nuclear waste or “fission fragments”. (Leslie Corrice, 2015) This waste contains radioisotopes, which are radioactive isotopes that have long half-lives. This means that the radioisotopes are able to stay in the atmosphere for hundreds of thousands of years, which is extremely hazardous to the earth’s environment. Very commonly this waste contaminates water and ruins the quality of both air and soil, which in turn devastates the planet.
In Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, the moon is introduced as an important symbol in the first chapter of the book. Ishmael is told by an old man, “We must strive to be like the moon”. Later that day, Ishmael asks his Grandmother what the old man meant by this.
“The moon was just a bright blob of light in the night sky” (Dowell,48). Jamie talked about how the moon didn’t do anything spectacular. “ A comet would be interesting, and a meteor plummeting toward Earth would be very interesting. But the moon just kind of sits there all night” (Dowell,49). Her brother on the other hand, TJ, who went missing in the Vietnam War, saw the moon as a piece of art, he studied it every night.
When reading a science fiction novel, it is likely that one would come across rather questionable subjects when reading this genre, especially if the reader were to dabble in science themself. Scarlet, book two in the critically acclaimed book series, The Lunar Chronicles, by Marissa Meyer, is no exception. Throughout the course of this quadrilogy, there is a species of subhumans known as Lunars, inhabitants of the moon, mentioned multiple times. This is where we’ll be focusing our attention on as I try to see how some rather strange occurences work. Meyer has done her research, so a lot of her content would be fairly accurate, from what I know, but there are still two main weak points that I, an astronomy student, have found throughout Scarlet.
The moon revolves around the Earth, and objects fall because of gravity. At one point, during the 17th and 18th century, this new concept, and much more like it, was the talk of the town. This time period was called the scientific revolution, where philosophers and scientists questioned the views on the world resulting in unfamiliar discoveries and the creation of new ideas. Science has influenced culture, religion, and government during this time as it made its crucial impact for their different way of thinking. Science was an important factor when it comes to progress within their society as there were many new findings.
I’m going to tell you about this subject and persuade you to see this topic how I see it. My opinion on the Apollo 11 moon landing is that is did happen. I believe this because of evidence I have looked at. The evidence came from many credible sources including information convincing you that is was real, and convincing you is was faked from, College professors, NASA workers, and later trips to the moon from different countries including, the USA.
It was a great day for America as we won the “Space Race” and got safely to the moon, but not everyone was happy. In this essay, I will be talking about why some conspiracy theorists think that the historical moon landing of 1969 was staged and why I still believe that it was in fact, real. To begin, I will be showing you some evidence theorists use to support their claim of the landing being fake. The first is that when
Some of the material from the collision melted into the earth but some of it got hurled into space. The material that got thrown into space was enough to form into a small object a little smaller than the planet Mercury. Therefore the earth and moon are very similar in composition. For the moons size and distance from the sun, unlike the earth, it has a very little core. Because of the oxygen isotope ratios of earth and moon being so similar, it indicates that they originated in the same part
Then, the "historic event" was sent through television to the entire world who, for the most part, believed it. But if the moon landing was a hoax, thousands of people were involved. The conspiracy theorists say that the witnesses must have been disposed of. The people who believe the moon landing really happened say that it is just common sense that so many people couldn 't have been in on such a complex plan, therefore the moon landing had to have happened.
Nuclear energy is contained in the nucleus (core) of an atom. Atoms are very small particles that make up everything in this universe; therefore the bonding energy is very strong as we can see in the strength of objects we use on a daily basis. If done correctly, this energy can be harvested and used to generate electricity. There are two main ways to release this energy: Nuclear fusion and Nuclear Fission (National Nuclear Regulator, 2015)
The moon: a ball of rock orbiting earth. Although the moon has been thoroughly researched, countless mysteries still remain. In addition to theories about the moon 's composition and interior structure, the most important question remains unanswered: "Where did the moon come from?" In an attempt to better understand the origin of the moon, the Capture Theory, Fission Theory, Impact Theory, and, the most logical, Sister Theory, have been discussed. A video of the moon landing, in addition to further geological evidence, has been collected and used as challenging points towards questioning its originality.
On July 20th, 1969, the Apollo 11 with astronaut Neil Armstrong and his crew, guided by thousands of NASA technicians, supposedly landed on the surface of the moon. It was certainly one of the most extraordinary events accomplished by mankind up to that date. Neil Armstrong’s first words upon stepping on the moon surface will always be remembered “ A small step for mankind, a giant leap for humanity”. Ever since then, this achievement has been a matter of discussion by several groups that either believed or disbelieved this.
Nuclear fission and nuclear fusion are reactions that release energy because of the high-powered atomic bonds between the particles in the nucleus. To understand fission and fusion reactions, we must first understand the difference between them. In a fission reaction, a massive nucleus is split in the form of gamma rays, free neutrons and other subatomic particles. In a fusion reaction, two nuclei combine to form a new element that contains more protons in the nucleus (higher atomic number). Those are the basic definitions of the fusion and fission reactions.
“Fundamental to the conspiracy theory is our supposed inability to go to the Moon. The thought of humans traveling to the Moon was so fantastic even early science-fiction writers didn't predict it happening for centuries to come”(Villard). The rockets that made the moon landing possible were based upon the principles that were founded by Isaac Newton centuries ago, meaning that the underlying science was already there. The Saturn V rockets were more than capable of taking a man to the moon, and it was seen by thousands of eyewitnesses and media who saw the rocket blast off from the Kennedy space center in Florida (Villard). Those who claim that NASA could not reach the moon in the 1960’s discredit the hardworking engineers and scientists who paved the way for a lunar
