When I started off reading The Fixed, I was interested, curious as to what was going to happen. The essay started off with a positive connotation, such as the description of the polyphemus moth, “The moth’s enormous wings are velveted in a rich, warm brown, and edged in bands of blue and pink delicate as a watercolor wash.” This quote made me feel calm and cheerful from the way the author described the polyphemus moth in a “gentle” way, and just from reading that I expected the essay to be 100% positive. Being able to witness the life of an organism at a young age is very interesting; when I was in elementary school, I remember there was a day to see butterflies with the specifically green butterfly cage kit. An organism that has wings, needs to fly. If there is an organism that has a special ability or something unique, they are expected to use that when able to. After reading the essay, I thought about how animals were being limited to many things. For example, some animals lose their home or there are animals in zoos that live in very poor conditions and do not have the freedom they need. It also made me think about how there can be consequences when the right choice isn’t made. Such as the teacher not giving the moth the freedom it needs to spread its wings and fly, while the consequence was losing that ability and it will be walking forever, which was the biggest thing that surprised me when I first read the
