The short story “The Found Boat” by Alice Munro, is about a group of children find a wrecked boat in the Wawanash River, and repair it diligently in Clayton’s backyard. They all work together during this process, and find the truly friendship as they take turns riding the newly repaired boat down the river. Throughout the children’s journey, they persisting to have a positive and optimistic attitude while repairing the found boat, until the boat is ready to be used again. As the story develops, Munro proposes the idea of age and maturity which is followed by the children experiencing growing up at different levels as the boat was repaired. Carol complains to Eva with yelling, and they even tease each other and show no respect during the conversation. “‘Jesus, we'll freeze our legs off’ said one of the boys who were there too at the water's edge.” (Munro) Carol imitated the way that girl talks “in a sour whine” (Munro), which makes Eva feel awkward. None of them talks in direct conversation, other than mocking others, or speaking rudely; they only feel bored while wandering. Later in the story, at the moment they find the wrecked boat and decide to repair it, they start to cooperate. “Frank was the one who showed up with diagrams from books and Popular Mechanics magazines … Bud was best at sawing.” (Munro) The boys first start repairing the boat. The girls are also willing to help with what the boys asked. Unlike they were teasing others before, they help each other. After the boat was repaired, they launched it together. “Things were so confused it was impossible to tell whose turn came next, and nobody cared anyway.” (Munro) They are not selfish anymore, which is the beginning of their friendship.
