One of the first decisions to be made in the struggle for America's independence was whether or not they should seek independence in the first place. Those loyal to England believed that rebelling against England would lead only to "devastation and ruin" (Charles Inglis).

The founding fathers were smart men who the world looked up to because of their smart decisions, actions, that directed the U.S. to what it is today. But sadly in today’s society most people either have forgotten the things they did for us, or they just do not care. Although the overall political struggle began in 1765, the American Revolutionary War began in 1775 and ended in 1783. Following the war and after the colonialists gained their hard earned independence, they wanted to create a governmental system that did not oppress its citizens, so they wrote the United States Constitution in 1787.
Born from a fiery rebellion against tyranny, the American Revolution created a national identity built on division. The Revolution divided America from Britain, while separating white Americans from African-Americans. Of course, America fought for its freedom as a nation: whites, African-Americans, and others united against British authority. However, the new nation excluded one fifth of its population from its new ideals.
