The title of my book is The Freedom Writers Diary. Authors of this book are also main character in it Erin Gruwell and the freedom writers. This book was published in 1999 and the publisher is Broadway Books.This book is 290 pages long and filled with a whole bunch of things to keep you hooked on reading it. This story takes place in Long Beach, California. Erin Gruwell the main character in this book is starting her first-year as a english teacher with some unteachable students. One day in class she saw the students passing around a note she quickly intercepted it off one of the students desks. She saw that it was an ugly racial imitation of one of the students. Ms.Gruwell is determined to change this class and save all of their futures. Most of the students in her classes are gang member, drug dealers, or just don’t care about anything and anyone. She wants to lead them all on the right path but it’s going to take a lot of her time trying to do so. Later on they start reading different novels such as Anne Frank, and Zlata’s Diary. They started to see the real importance of life and that they should do better for themselves. They had to write their thoughts and feelings about not only the books but how they interacted with theirs. The class started raised money to have Miep Gies, the Dutch women who sheltered Anne Frank and her family. She told the students that they were “the real heroes.” All of Ms.Gruwell’s students started doing better not only in english class but life overall. They all graduated in 1998 and a year latter this book was published. In the beginning of the book most of the students didn’t like Ms.Gruwell and thought she shouldn’t even try teaching them anything. She has black hair and brown eyes. She has such a positive attitude and she never gives up. I would say that she is very kind and determined. She went through a lot during this time but she never gave up I think she is a role model as well. Someone you could go to and look up to if you ever needed to. This book took place at Wilson High School in Long Beach, California this setting is perfect for the story. In the book it talks about gangs and in this time and area it was bad around there. If it was taken place somewhere other than Long Beach I don’t think this book would’ve worked as well as it did. It was around the 1990s when this took place and it set a good mood for the book. The author wanted to inform the reader to never give up on something. If you put your mind to it do everything you can to pursue it then. This theme never to give up and be determined to finish what you started or pursue what you want was very obvious. There were so many examples throughout the book where you saw characters not give up. The characters even though they were down they weren’t out of the fight just yet they were determined and got what they wanted even with all the
