Drama is simply defined as a writing or work that is meant to be performed. Through many, many generations, stories have been enjoyed by people all around the world through plays, musicals, television programs, radio shows and many other avenues of entertainment. Long before modern-day writing and printing, people would carry on traditional stories through verbal communication. Today, we have cost effective methods of producing all kinds of written works, but even in modern times, many people still prefer preformed media over written works. This genre was the Greek comedy, a genre which often exhibited ludicrous characters and unexpected plots. Satire was a very common theme within the comedy genre, as well as different types of parodies. Aristophanes was most likely the most influential comedy writer of the 5th century, writing the popular plays The Frogs and The Wasps. These plays evoke humor by placing the stories’ characters in strange situations and twisting the plot from what the average Greek audience would expect. By the time that the 4th century had come upon the Greeks, drama performances had become a very large avenue of entertainment for people all over Greece and the surrounding areas. This rising popularity of theatre led to many innovations that can still be observed in modern times. Initially, the people of Greece would sit on a hillside and observe plays, but as drama became increasingly popular, the Greeks began to build large structures that were built specifically for theatrical acts. These giant auditoriums were an incredible architectural accomplishment, and modern day stadiums are incredibly similar in design to these structures that were built hundreds of years ago. To this day, the auditorium of Dionysus is still standing and remains one of the most prominent signs of theatrical and architectural advancements. Plays would later become a part of a larger event, the roman games. Drama performances are very likely to have influenced the Roman people to start housing various physical competitions, such as chariot races, gladiator fights and other forms of competitive entertainment.
