The Ghosts of Sleath Have you ever been in a dark alley at night? Have you ever been scared to go in a creepy building? You know that feeling you get when watching a scary movie. Imagine that all in one. You would be in sleath. In the book The Ghosts of Sleath the setting is a small area in England filled with ghosts. David Ash ends up in a the town of Sleath to find the reason for the ghosts and finds some pretty disturbing things going on .The eerie setting of sleath is quite unsettling and makes David Ash and the reader very uncomfortable. The feels the presence of evil and creates a eerie and creepy mood. And people are also just pretending as if nothing is happening like it is normal. “It’s not important what's happening to sleath is ” (Herbert, 67). As people begin to notice more things going on the story get creepier and scarier. The cold creepy really set the story in place. As david ash drives through the town the starts to describe it. The says it has “old world houses” and that they are “quaint”. The also describe it as a “tourist’s dream”. But in reality its the opposite. Every moment you are reading you can feel the mood, tone, where you are, you can taste the air. When David was in the house with the ghost and went up the stairs it was as if you were right behind him hunting the ghost down. Every moment is lived through. Herbert really represent how different and odd this town really is. When reading you get the feeling of being an outsider. The whole time you feel like something is behind you about to jump at you. Or when you are reading you check in your room to make sure there is nothing watching you. You get scared when going to sleep at night because this story really brings fear out in people. I believe this is what the story is meant to do.When you are walking in the woods you hear the trees ruffling and just think something is there but it’s your mind. I think this story is meant to put you into states of fear and terror but in a good way. After reading this story i believe this is one of the greatest horror stories of all time that scares you to death and creeps you outAlso said by other reviews it says he is “the master of british horror.”. When being interviewed by Mamilliian Pan James said the tried to make the book a “talking terror”.
