I am comparing both “The Gift of Magi’s” & “The Necklace’s” style in this essay. Style is made up of: mood & diction, tone, imagery, characterization, and foreshadowing & irony. Both stories have similar plots; they are also similar in some literary elements like the characterization, and imagery… and differ in other elements like foreshadowing & irony.

Tone is the attitude that the author uses with regards to a specific character or development. In the “The Necklace” the author wrote in a detached tone which lacked sentimentality, was suspenseful and filled with irony. In “The Gift of the Magi” the author wrote in an omniscient manner with a wisdom filled tone, that had ended with irony laced into the last scene. Both stories were similar in the sense that they both had a tone filled with irony end their stories, and a detached tone from start to finish. They differ in many aspects such as: in “The Necklace” the author was distant with little to no emotion, but in “The Gift of the Magi” the author was telling a story in a warm, gentle and grandfatherly way.

Mood depends on the author’s diction. In “The Necklace” the mood can be influenced by the reader’s own experiences and sympathies, for example those who are empathetic may view the mood as sad, and filled with grief.
