Alexus, a young middle school student can make connections to the story “The Gift Of The Magi” because like Jim and Della she has to make sacrifices for her loved ones. In the story Jim and Della don’t have enough money to buy each other christmas gifts. So Della has to cut her hair and sell it and Jim has to sell his watch to make money for gifts.The author of the story develops the theme when being in a relationship sacrifices is often needed.
The couple acts in a caring way when they both do something they don’t want to for each other. The story shows this by saying’ “she paid twenty-one dollars for it. Another example is when Jim says “I want you to understand me, Dell,” he said. “Nothing like a haircut could make me love you any less.” this shows sacrifice because after all the years she 's had her hair really long when she finally cut it Jim still loved her and that shows sacrifice.
In conclusion the story, “The Gift of The Magi” Proves the theme when being in a relationship sacrifices is often needed. The story shows this because Jim sold his watch to make money to buy the combs that Della had loved. And Della had all her hair cut off and had to sell it to make money to buy Jim the watch chain but when they both gave each other their gifts they both couldn’t use them because they got rid of the things they needed to use them. This also happens in real life when you buy something you have to get rid of money that you could have been using to buy something
