This past Sunday, June 18th, America lost muslim teen, Nabra Hassanen to what most call road rage, and others, a hate crime. Hassanen, accompanied by a group of friends were headed back to a local mosque after a trip to a fast-food restaurant. It was then that they encountered driver Darwin Martinez Torres and an argument erupted. The altercation escalated, resulting in the capturing and death of 17 year old Hassanen. Torres had beaten her with a baseball bat, abducted her, and dumped her body into a lake.

From the book I have learned the history of the KKK, other knight groups, their way of living, and their way of thinking. I have also learned how somebody can be a regular old citizen in our community, but is a part of a hate group and believes that Blacks, Latinos, Asians, people from the LGBT community, and Jews are the enemy. Not only are these groups are more than relevant all over the country, but there are young children who will keep these groups alive. The children will be corrupted into thinking that racial hate is normal way to think and will follow the footsteps into their parents. While I previously viewed the Muslim form of veiling as misogynistic and compulsory; however, Tamira Stephens describes that certain American Muslims see it as empowering (Stephens pg. 5). Furthermore, despite the common belief as veiling being particular to Muslims, Tamira Stephens also reports through her essay that even “more American” subcultures (the Amish) have a form of this practice much closer to my perception of misogyny (cite). Though Stephens’ comparison of the Amish and American Muslim veil serves as a means to subdue any negative stereotypes surrounding the Muslim practice, Stephens’ description of this Islamic practice of veiling can also serve as a testament to the positive effects of pluralism and equality in the United States.
In the memoir, Red Scarf Girl, by Ji-li Jiang, Ji-li changes over the course of her story because she is happy in the beginning,her mood stays the same at the beginning of the middle and then changes whent he story moves forwards in the middle. In the beginning of the story Ji-li is the happiest girl in the world. During the prologue Ji-li says” They hoped I was the happiest girl in the world, and I was”. This proves in the beginning of the story Ji-li describes that she was very happy.
Muhammad approaches all of his subject matters from a very unique perspective. He approaches it much differently then other sociologists. Muhammad looks at racist’s attitudes in the fields of sociology and in the North. This shows how pervasive racism was at the time and it is an encouragement for other historians to look beyond just the South when dealing with racism. An excellent example of this is when Muhammad discussed how whites thought of blacks as unequal, so they were uncomfortable with blacks living next door.

While discrimination towards Muslim Americans existed before, after 9/11 the general public’s view of Muslim Americans rapidly declined and resulted in an increase in the Muslim-terrorist stereotype as well as many individuals having to face unwanted hostility. In a study on microaggressions directed towards Muslim Americans, a participant shared, “’A truck driver said to my mom, ‘Say hi to Osama,”’ presuming that because she was Muslim she was associated with terrorism (Nadal). While in another case, a participant described how because his name was Osama, his seventh grade teacher “accidentally” called him Osama bin Laden during attendance, “but [he knew]
Slavery and 9/11 is the cause for the hate towards these two communities. Society being predominantly white for centuries instilled this white supremacy ideology. When society puts the white community on a pedestal, and they degrade and discriminate towards the Muslim and black community. This shouldn 't be swept under the rug. This number can be surprising to many Americans because of what they see and hear on media. There are many misconceptions about Muslims in our society that is causing hate towards them.
