“The Giver”- A Dystopian Society The setting of the novel “The Giver” written by Lois Lowry is a dystopian society. The Community in which the characters live in is a well ordered and harmonious society. These following paragraphs will be going through the characteristics of a dystopian society and how the novel “The Giver” relates to each of these attributes. Living in a “perfect world” comes with its advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages includes: that the characters get to live in a Community with no suffering or discomfort, meaning that it is serene and peaceful. Although they have power over many things such as the weather they lost some of the most important things in life such as colour. In the novel, The Giver explained to Jonas how sameness is like trading. “We gained control of many things.
