But occasionally, the outcomes can be worse than others. In these two texts, "The Giver", a science fiction text, by Lois Lowry, and "The Lottery", a dystopian text, by Shirley Jackson, the common theme is 'acting without thinking can cause catastrophic events’. This all connects to how acting without thinking can cause catastrophic events. Jonas’ father acts without being sensible about things which results in murdering children. Although releasing children is part of his job, it doesn’t stop him from pondering about what he does and realizing that he’s ending people’s lives. He’s definitely capable of perceiving that killing children is not right-minded. Secondly, the Giver says, “‘And I listened as Rosemary told them that she would prefer to inject herself…The community lost Rosemary after five weeks and it was a disaster for them.’” (Lowry 83-87). Furthermore, the theme ‘acting without thinking can cause catastrophic events’, is very important to think about because this is something that many people do.
