But occasionally, the outcomes can be worse than others. In these two texts, "The Giver", a science fiction text, by Lois Lowry, and "The Lottery", a dystopian text, by Shirley Jackson, the common theme is 'acting without thinking can cause catastrophic events’. The theme in the book “The Giver”, by Lois Lowry is ‘acting without thinking can cause catastrophic events’. For instance, the Giver said, “‘Listen to me Jonas. They can’t help it. This all connects to how acting without thinking can cause catastrophic events. Jonas’ father acts without being sensible about things which results in murdering children. Although releasing children is part of his job, it doesn’t stop him from pondering about what he does and realizing that he’s ending people’s lives. He’s definitely capable of perceiving that killing children is not right-minded. Secondly, the Giver says, “‘And I listened as Rosemary told them that she would prefer to inject herself…The community lost Rosemary after five weeks and it was a disaster for them.’” (Lowry 83-87). This quote demonstrates how Rosemary acted without thinking. She was so depressed that she released herself without thinking about what the people would go through when she did. Additionally in the text, “The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson, the villagers of a small settlement stone other community members because of an unjustifiable tradition without thinking about what they are doing. Furthermore, the theme ‘acting without thinking can cause catastrophic events’, is very important to think about because this is something that many people do. Individuals commonly don’t think about what they are doing and how it could hurt people. This all comes right back to the effects of acting without thinking and if it’s a good choice or not. But overall, it can now be concluded that acting without thinking usually causes negative consequences and that acting without thinking, is not a great
