Pale Eyes When daily life is controlled, it is possible some people wouldn’t have the ability to see color and most parents wouldn’t love their children just due to the fact that it was not the way they were “programmed”. It may get a little frustrating after awhile... if someone even noticed that something was off. In the science fiction novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, there is a twelve-year-old boy named Jonas. He is named the new Receiver which is a very respected and high-end job in his community. This job also introduces him to a man that he calls the Giver.
Just think. Nobody has any knowledge of the past. You do not know what color is, you have no emotion, and everybody is the same. The world that you live in is colorless, emotionless, drab, even lifeless. This is the type of world that Jonas and The Giver live in.
Bjorn Skogquist’s essay An Apology is a story about the hardships her and a new group of friends cause for a young girl in their class named Tiffany Stephenson during the fourth grade. Early in the essay Bjorn talks about her hardships she was going through during the time. These hardships include moving to a new school and her parents having marriage issues. The focus soon turns to the ridicule her and the classmates displayed to one of their classmates named Tiffany Stephenson. In Jacoba Urist’s “The Art and Science of Apologizing” which was published in The Atlantic in 2016, he talks about what is the best way to make an apology perfect. There are many factors that people don’t think about when they are about to apology, which includes: the moment in which they are going to apologize, repetition, and making sure the person you are apologizing to actually accepts the apology. After reading Urist’s essay and then going to read Harvey Weinstein’s apology that he wrote after being accused of sexual harassment against multiple women, which was published in The New York Times, one could see the significant differences that Weinstein’s apology should be like as compared to how Urist says one should be. Weinstein’s apology has more weaknesses than it does strengths and the many problems, which includes apologizing too early, not acknowledging the women that were assaulted and not showing responsibility and remorse are all wrong according to Urist’s paper on how an apology should sound. Al of these issues causes Weinstein’s apology to be a sad attempt of an apology that will not be accepted by society.
Feelings and Emotion Different feelings and emotion are not known in the community within the people. The Giver and Jonas are the only true people that know how to feel the different emotions. Every night at the conclusion of their evening meal one of the rituals is the evening telling of feelings. In the very first Chapter Jonas talks about how it was almost December and Jonas was beginning to be frightened. But then thought that was the wrong word to use.
Imagine living in a world with no freedom, choice, individuality, and color. Would you want to live in a world like this? Most of you would have said no, but a boy named Jonas has no choice, but to adhere to his community’s rules. In the book and the movie, “The Giver”, by Louis Lowery, Jonas finds it difficult to accept his community’s way of life. However, after he becomes the receiver of memory, he challenges the community after discovering what the world used to be like before sameness.
Is Jonas’s society different than ours? Utopian (N) an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. The key word there is ‘imagined’ as we haved learned in The Giver that not everything can be perfect; it 's just limiting the being of a human. By having such limitations, the people can’t hold their memories, can’t see color, and the government chooses their family. Jonas’s society is vastly different than ours in various ways.
Memories are Life “A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what 's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later”(Stanley Kubrick). In the story The Giver, there were multiple themes with a meaning.

He was even chastised when he exaggerated as a Four. He said that he was starving, but he was only hungry. His teachers made sure he understood that even though it was an unintentional lie, it was still a lie because as long as he lives in their community he will never be starving so they didn’t want him to ever say anything like that again.
