"The Giver" by Lois Lowry was awarded the 1994 Newbery Medal. The John Newbery Medal is a literary award given by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association also known as (ALA) for short. The award is given to the author of "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." Named after John Newbery, an 18th-century English publisher of juvenile books, also the first children's book award in the world. The medal was designed by Rene Paul Chambellan and pictures an author giving his work (a book) to a boy and girl to read. One major theme in "The Giver" is the value of an individual. The author points out that when people are unable to experience pain, their individual is devalued. Another example is "The Giver's" character insight. Life in Jonas's (the main character) community is predictable, and unchanging, so are the people who live in the community. Which makes some of the characters uncomplicated. They are simple and one-dimensional characters. Jonas is a dynamic character because he changes throughout the novel due to his actions and his experiences of being "The Receiver". The last example is style and language of how "The Giver" was a good candidate for the Newbery Medal. Lowry narrates "The Giver" in a simple and straightforward style.
