The Giver is a novel by Lois Lowry, about a dystopian society. At the beginning of the book, Jonas was obedient and loyal to his community; but when he gets assigned the job of the receiver he gains knowledge about his community which including colors, animals, and most of all, feelings. When Jonas learns these things, his opinion about his community changes, and he starts to feel resentment, anger, and hatred. At the beginning of the book, Jonas felt loyal and obedient toward his community.
Lois Lowry gets most of the ideas for the giver from her life. When her sister died she wondered if it would be better if people couldn’t love at all because then we would not feel pain after the love ends. This is how Lowry got the idea that the people in the community cannot love. When Lowry saw the news report about the mass murder she didn’t really care because it wasn’t anywhere near her. In the giver when people are released the person that releases them doesn’t feel any remorse for what they have done.
Sometimes people change, and sometimes it’s a little change and other times it’s a big change. In the book, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jones was just a regular eleven in his community, and he would never break the rules until he had become the receiver. On page 111 it states in the text, “He was not yet qualified to be a Giver himself; nor had gabriel been selected to be a receiver. That he had this power frightened him. He decided to not tell.”
Jonas’ Hardships Lois Lowry, the author, wrote a novel titled “The Giver” which took place in a dystopian society with ideas like climate control, sameness, and precision of language. The main character, Jonas, was selected for the assignment “The Receiver of Memory” and this assignment caused him many hardships. Throughout the story, Jonas faces many hardships related to his assignment, his friends, and the community. The theme to the story is overcoming obstacles because Jonas has to conquer many hardships throughout the novel.
When Jonas leaves the community he accomplishes going to a place with warmth, love, color. Jonas hopes that by leaving the community he is breaking the tradition of the Giver and the Receiver bearing all the memories. .Jonas changes throughout The Giver and as a result, tries to change the community. Jonas is a 12 year old boy with no emotions or feelings.

Literary Analysis: The Giver Imagine a world where everything seems perfect but truly it is not as pleasant as it appears. In The Giver by Lois Lowry shows us a community in the future with no feelings at all. Jonas a twelve year old boy knows his life as it is and one evening he learns the truth about the community. Jonas set’s off into a adventure to change it all. Character,conflict,and symbolism makes the reader see thru the eyes of a twelve year old in a place of slavery disguised without anyone knowing it.
The Giver Are things as good as they seem? Are things as good as they seem? This is the reoccurring question I ask as I read Lois Lowry’s “The Giver.” As the story begins, Jonas, the main character, is having trouble finding the “precise” word to describe his feelings about the communities upcoming, Ceremony of Twelve. His determination to find just the absolute, exact word causes an uneasiness, a sense of something “not quite right”, it foreshadows future predicaments and turmoil ahead in Jonas young life.
MAIN CHARACTERS JONAS: Jonas is the main character in the book. Everything that happens in the book happens from Jonas’s point on view, you get to know how he feels, his thoughts and all the minor characters. Jonas is an ‘’11’’ which means he is eleven years old. In December he turns twelve, same as all the other children born on the same year as him. From the start of the book you get to know that being a ‘’12’’ is very important because you get to know what you’re going to do your whole life, basically your career.
The Giver has a boy named Jonas who lives in a perfect world or so he though( later in the book he gets the role of the receiver of memory) Jonas has to learn all the history of the world but he learns the truth about past and that everything is not what it seems. At the end he gives everyone the truth and every memory that he has. This book does not have anything in here that is not ethical for the main plot of the story.
Throughout the novel, Jonas opened many peoples eyes on what the rest of the world had to offer. Lois Lowry wrote this wonderful novel about a boy standing up for what he believes in no matter the risk. Jonas’ experiences developed a theme over the course of The Giver by teaching the readers that perfection does not exist, except for in the eye of the beholder. After receiving numerous memories, Jonas realized that the community was keeping most of the world from the citizens.
