Are dystopian societies ethical? To answer this question, we first need to define ethical. Ethics are what each person considers right or wrong. This can be influenced by many different variables such as: upbringing, social norms, and parents. If someone grew up in a family of criminals, they would have very different moral standards from someone who grew up normally. I consider societies to be ethical when they do what is proper and necessary for their citizens given the circumstances. Dystopias are societies that have been altered so that people have very different interpretations of what is ethical. In The Giver, if you break 3 rules you will be “released”. We find out later in the book that this just means the people were euthanized. “Release” is a concept that we were introduced to at the very beginning of the book when a pilot, “QUOTE” (). This quote shows that EXPLAIN QUOTE. While few ordinary citizens are aware of what being “released” was, they knew it was seen as a major punishment and a sign of failure. However, in the USSR, those who go against the Soviet Union’s lifestyle or social norms face consequences, which are often brutal. The punishments can vary from being arrested to being executed or stripped of your rights as a citizen. But if you were caught doing something you should not be, you put your whole family at risk to! They could even deem your children “socially dangerous”, which often got them sent to corrective labor colonies or special regime orphanages. And even if had done no wrong, you were still at risk for being sent to a Gulag, like many other innocent people. The author of ARTICLE explains the punishment for attempting to escape one of these gulags saying, “QUOTE” ().
