The Giver Compare/Contrast Essay When some people hear the words ‘perfect society’ what do they think of? Take a look at our society, then take a look at Jonas’s society, between our two societies there are some comparisons and a vast amount of differences. For instance, the rules are different, as well as their family units and their individuality. While our society is more on the modern side, Jonas’s society is plainer. When it comes to the rules in our society, we don’t normally think of rules that are very extreme.
In The Giver, there are people assigned as birth mothers. The children they provide, are nurtured to be given to selected family units made up from a designated mother and father that are not in love because they are chosen. This cycle happens over and over. The cycle creates the population of the community. People are so used to this because they are told that life is created like this is natural and better for the success of the community.
Is Jonas’s society different than ours? Utopian (N) an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. The key word there is ‘imagined’ as we haved learned in The Giver that not everything can be perfect; it 's just limiting the being of a human. By having such limitations, the people can’t hold their memories, can’t see color, and the government chooses their family. Jonas’s society is vastly different than ours in various ways.
We are lucky to have the luxury of being able to make our own decisions. While our community have jobs, birthdays, and family, just like the community in The Giver,

The elders see Jonas as their next receiver of memory because he has the intelligence, courage, honesty, kindness, and curiosity, These traits help him gain the position of receiver of memory. The Giver is one of the smartest elders in the community is the only one with Jonas who has the memories. The memories were kept by the two people because the community couldn’t handle them so only the two people have to feel the pain and happiness in the memories. The community also eliminates the freedom of choice from the people because the elders decide everything for the people who live there.

When people try to create perfect societies, it creates mayhem! Our modern day society is far from a perfect society in the novel The Giver. While appearing perfect, Jonas’ society has many rules and laws under the surface that make it much more dangerous than modern day society.
The movie “The Giver” sets place in a community that is very different than our own. The film is shown in black and white which represents the community and how they live their lives. At the head of the community is the elders who have come up with the rules for the community and choose the jobs assigned to the children. In charge of the elders is the chief elder who is like the president of the community; has the last say. One of the elders is very unique from all of the rest, he is the receiver.
Every society is characterized by a particular set of ethical issues that often result to conflicts. The legal framework governs the code of conduct of the people in the society but what if there was a way to completely eliminate the elements causing people to have disagreements as demonstrated in the film known as the Giver, 2014. One of the main themes in “The Giver” is the importance of individuality. The people in the community are not given any freedom to be individuals. They are not allowed to be different, and this creates less understanding of the world. This is why the community needs a receiver to understand these things for them.
“We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others” (Lowry). In other words, this means that to get what you want, you have to get rid of other things you have. Although there are many similarities between The Giver and our society, there are a lot more differences like families, rules, and personal freedoms. For starters there are many differences with families between their society and our society.
