Jonas’s community went into sameness; sameness is controlling ideas put together to form a program. The Giver states that sameness is everything that makes our world different from Jonas’s community like snow and hills were taken away from them. Sameness allows Jonas’s community to Do you know what a utopia or dystopia is? Well neither do the citizens of Jonas’s community.I believe that Jonas’s community is a dystopia and the citizens can’t see that. An utopian society is a fantasy type land that is perfect in all ways. A dystopian society is like an utopian society but is very different. The text states that when Jonas was observed during his child years, they watched everything that he had done. Also, Jonas took an apple because he was starting to see its true color, the entercom came on and announced about Jonas taking food out of the designated eating areas. The community’s citizens is always being watched. Surveillance is major thing among a dystopian community, this fact pushes the idea that Jonas lives in a dystopian community.
Being able to see the colors of people’s skin,hair,and clothing allows us to create opinions and feel emotions. In the Giver, it states that the community removed color so people couldn’t have opinions. If the people of Jonas 's community could have opinions they would start to have questions about the community elders, this leading to them revolting. Being able to feel emotions and see color would end the dystopian community Jonas lives in. I have three different reasons why Jonas’s community is a dystopian community. First, Jonas’s community went into sameness; sameness is the removal of climate and weather. Next is surveillance of the community, the elders are able to see everything the citizens do or say giving them zero sense of privacy. Finally is the ability to see colors and feel emotions, the citizens can’t see color or have an opinion preventing them to revolt against the community.
