The book the giver written by Lois Lowry was published in 1993 and has a total of 4 books in the series. The Giver has won numerous awards including the Newbery Medal, the William Allen White award and the Regina medal. The movie the Giver was released 21 years later in 2014 and was produced by Walden Media. In this essay I will compare the movie and the book and discuss similarities as well as differences focusing on the protagonist Jonas, the setting, rules in the community and Fiona.
We will start off by talking about Jonas. Jonas in the book has light eyes that make him able to receive memories whereas in the movie he has dark eyes and he has a birthmark that lets him receive memories. Another prominent difference is that in the movie

In both the book and the movie the setting is called “the community” and is where Jonas lives for most of his life until he runs away. Another similarity is that they have the same jobs in the movie and the book like nurturer, caretaker of the old, birthmother etc. However there were many more differences than similarities. In the film there was a fountain in the community where Jonas, Asher and Fiona meet but there wasn’t in the novel. The community in the film also was a lot more high tech then I had imagined. In the book they need to have feeling talks and dream talks where they share their emotions and inform each other about their dreams that night. In the movie they don’t need to have dream talks but they do have feeling talks. Some similarities are that they need to use precise language, for example in both the film and the novel his parents correct his language when he asks “do you love me?” and they say that love is too general and has very little meaning. Another similarity is that the names of new children are kept secret until they are put into a family and a case where this was portrayed was when Jonas’ dad said that the baby is named Gabe and Jonas asked if they were allowed to see his name and his dad said no. Some other similarities are that a family can only be a father, mother, daughter and son. Also when you start to get “stirrings” you have to take medication to stop them from happening. There are also rules that prohibit lying and having strong
