In her novel, “The Giver”, Lois Lowry tells us: “The worst part about holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.” She turns her own memories into fictionalized utopian books. Her mother had a photo from 1911 that had 3 children in it with freshly ironed pressed ribbons. The idea of a ribbon in Lily’s hair (a character from “The Giver”) came from a flashback memory of her mother. Lois Lowry’s given name was Lois Ann Hammersberg. She was born on March 20, 1937, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Since the age of 8 or 9, Lois wanted to be a writer. Her father was an Army officer. Consequently, she moved to many different places. For her education, she spent some years in Japan but then graduated from a high school in New York City. She married at age 19 to a naval officer Donald Lowry. The two moved around a lot due to Donald’s career. Despite not finishing college at Brown University, sometime in the 1970s she received her bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Southern Maine. I wanted to explore what society might become after a catastrophic world event. Only at the end did I realize I could make it connect to ‘The Giver’, Lois Lowry explained in an interview with Scholastic. “The Giver” is about Jonas, who poses as the protagonist of the story, that lives in a society that deems themselves as perfect. All the while, Jonas starts questioning the way his community lives and makes an effort to change it. In comparison to “The Giver”, “Gathering Blue” takes place in a dystopian future like setting that’s meant to take place after the fall of a once existing society. The text is about a rejected, handicapped, orphan who also doesn’t approve of her community’s style of living.
