People around the world don’t realize the stance of perseverance and how it is used in everyday life for many. Perseverance is persistence in doing something no matter what may happen or get in your way of succeeding. In the memoir, The Glass Castle, by Jeanette Walls presents the stars and Venus as symbolism in order to unveil the amount of perseverance there shall be taken in life, ultimately illustrating that despite any hardship, you keep pushing through. Walls use of symbolism portrays the thought of specialness even when times are rough. Take for example, how “Those shining stars, he liked to point out, were one of the special treats for people like us who lived out in the wilderness” (39). For instance, how, “The city lights obscured the stars, but on clear nights I could see Venus on the horizon, up over the dark water, glowing steadily” (281). The lights blinded everything in the sky but the Venus star you would see because it twinkles so bright. In relation to the Walls family, Venus is atypical and out of the ordinary making it worthy in every dual event. Jeannette wished the best for Maureen when she moved to California, she states, “But I also hoped that Maureen had chosen California because she thought that was her true home, the place where she really belonged, where it was always warm and you could dance in the rain, pick grapes right off the vines, and sleep outside at night under the stars” (276).
