Well if you have you can relate to the Walls family from the book which is a memoir by Jeannette Walls The Glass Castle. The Wells family lives poor by choice with a father who makes very questionable decisions. The fathers name is Rex, Rex birthed three children Brian, Lori, and Jeannette. Because of their father these children experience so many different things in their lives but the main character of this story is Jeanette Walls. He swore so much which made his kids think that was correct. Walls always says the bad words her dad used to say, one that stood out is “was it a big old hairy sonofabitch with the damndest looking teeth and claus”(36). Throughout the story Walls would tell of this being one of his favorite sayings (sonofabitch) which would show his kids swearing was okay. Nothing about parents swearing around their kids is okay and this teaches them bad morals. Rex did not teach his kids about Christmas. None of the kids ever got the chance to believe in Santa claus. Walls tells a first hand story saying that “I never believed in Santa Claus. None of us kids did. Mom and Dad refused to let us”(39). Why would a kid's parents let them miss the magic of christmas? This could mess them up for life because not only are they different just with Rex being their parent but they are different for not believing in Santa. Walls continues to tell stories of her father and to go along with Christmas Jeannette, her mom, and siblings all planned the perfect one but Rex ruined it. Shortly after Rex had burnt down the christmas tree Jeannette covered”the Christmas that was supposed to be our best Christmas we’d ever had. When Dad went crazy, We all had our own ways of shutting down and closing off, and that was what we did that night”(115). After Rex had endangered his family, Messed up every christmas his family had the opportunity to do, Forced his family to run from whatever he was running from with him, and damn near lost every job he had ever had. We all can conclude Rex was a bad father all around. Every Father loves their kids but their actions make that love seem very small and could put them and their family in danger. At the end of the day Rex’s kids should be living with another family and should never see their father
