In the Glass Menagerie the main characters are Tom, Amanda and Laura. When reading the Glass Menagerie I have found that the conflicts rely with in the character. When looking at the story I can sense that tTom has a inner conflict between him and his father. I feel as if he has emotional mixed feelings about his father. It seems has if he wishes for a better life and can escape the one that he is in, he wishes he wasn’t stuck and could go forward and peruse his dreams. He and seems as if he dislikes his own father because he feels stuck and his father is out living. When looking at Amanda her conflict is self image and doubt, it seems as if she wishes she could go back to the past where she was know in the environment by men. He quotes “Why, listen, if self is what I thought of, Mother, I’d be where he is – GONE! This also creates a conflict with him and Amanda , meaning he feels she is keeping him grounded in there at home. Speaking of conflict I feel as if it has tention, and unresolveable. He speaks down on Amanada and has no respect. Example “You’ll go up, up on a broomstick, over Blue Mountain with seventeen gentleman callers! You ugly – babbling old – witch…” This right hear presents itself the conflict of verbal abuse. , Amanda’s inner conflict exists because she feels as if her family is unable to flourish financially, which, in-turn leads her to exert power over Laura – the excuse Amanda has to look for a gentleman caller to save the household. For this reason Amanda’s conflict also becomes an “outer” conflict, much like Tom’s. Amanda’s power over Laura, as shown in the example: “Of course – some girls do marry”, is a hint of her plans for Laura to succeed.
