When it comes to the plays vertical axis i'd have to say that it would go like this.

Plot: The plot of the play is about a small family of people who have been so detached to reality that they live in their own little illusion world. So when these three come together in the events of the play all three are always at each others throat, not one having the same view or goals as the other. Near the end of the play they work together to try to find a gentleman caller …show more content…

It is a very important presence in the play as its seen everywhere in the plot and the characters that inhabit said plot. The characters all show themselves to be living in different worlds that only sync up with each other's when they need to speak to each other. Without this theme, the play wouldn't be about a sad play where a family fell apart due to this unwillingness to accept reality. If they were able to accept this there would be no problems in the play. When it comes to the plays horizontal axis, the parts are:

Exposition: The exposition of the play begins with Tom starting to tell us about how things started to fall apart before telling us that this is a memory play. One where everything had already happened and was going to be told through his viewpoint.

Conflict: The main conflict in this play is a character vs. environment, the environment being reality itself. The characters all struggle to fight against the reality of how things really are, using their own little illusion worlds to keep themselves from having to accept …show more content…

During the climax its revealed that Jim really did love Laura, but however his life is dedicated tot he woman he had found, Betty. The climax ends with Amanda and Laura being left at home for them to live in the aftermath while Tom leaves or a merchant company for adventure.

Denouement: The strands brought together is how the dysfunctional family finally break away from each other, Tom going his separate way from his mother and sister. Laura and Amanda are left to fend for themselves and the memory play ends there.

The horizontal elements help to tell the story due to the fact that they are the events of the story. For a small memory play such as this,, they need to get through each of the elements quickly, something that they did very well in the play. It helped to drive the play to its climax where we finally end off with learning how this dysfunctional family is no longer what it used to be. from Discussion #1 - The Glass Menagerie
