The Go Card Project is a joint effort by Cubic Transportation Systems and the Queensland Government to upgrade the existing bus, train, and ferry networks away from a paper ticket based system to a smart card based ticketing system initiated in 2003. Following the success of comparable systems implemented in New South Wales and Victoria, the upgrade consisted of fitting smart card readers on public busses, trains, and ferries, payment machines at train and bus stations, and an online portal for accessing accounts and payment methods tied to the card.

The “Child” go card is for children between five and fourteen years of age and includes concession fares, the “Adult” card for persons above fifteen years of age and charges standard rates, the “Concession” card for general pension card holders, secondary and tertiary students, and defence force veterans, and a “Senior” card with concession rates, or a “Senior Card +go” card which has a go card on one side, and a Senior Citizens card on the other. Some negative impacts of the system include the default fare which is charged ($5 for bus, $10 for train) when either the patron or the machine incorrectly scans the go card at the start or end of a trip affecting “More than 11,000 Go Card users” (Calligeros, 2011), similarly to the example above, someone who has gained access to someone online go card account can track where that person is going, where be it a hacker, the police, or the government. Similarly, cards can now be stolen and used potentially indefinitely if the owner does not cancel the card. Furthermore, the cards will expire after 5 years and any credit left on it gets funnelled into Translink, whereas cash that was used to pay for tickets does not
