Modern and ambitious personal desires have become very distant from the old-fashioned preaching of family traditions. Because of the gap between the central ideas of personal desires and family traditions, an individual is left having to choose one and abandon the other. This is clearly illustrated in “The Godfather”, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, by how Michael Corleone’s lifestyle get completely changed as he switched from pursing his own goals to working in the family business. It is stated in the beginning of the movie that Michael is a war hero and that he is not willing to work in the family business, but as a series of unfortunate events unfold he is left with no choice other than to kill Sollozzo for the sake of keeping the family safe. As a result of this he makes many enemies, who make numerous attempts to take his life. Michael also loses his chance to live a normal American life, which was also one his bigger dreams. He loses this chance because of the enemies he created for the sake of the family, at this point even if he wanted to live a normal life he still could not because his enemies would not let go of how he killed an important person from their ranks. Michael ends up having to go to Sicily because America become too dangerous of a place for him to live, In Sicily Michael meets a woman whom he fall deeply in love with and marries. It becomes very clear that Michael wants to have kids with his wife and live a long life with her, but because of the enemies he had made in America for the sake of his family, his wife is accidently murdered and another of Michael’s dreams dies with her. At the beginning of the movie it is shown that Michael is in a committed relationship with Kay Adams, but because Michael has to escape America for his own safety his relationship Kay to tears over the years. Had Michael never done dirty work for his family, his relationship with Kay would not have weakened or at least it would not weakened in the same manner. Shortly after Michael moves to Sicily, he marries a woman named Apollonia who is murdered soon after their marriage, which ends Michael’s relationship with her as her husband. Based on the information presented in “The Godfather” of how the mafia does not kill innocent people and people who are not involved in their kind of business, it becomes very clear that Apollonia would not have been murdered if Michael was not involved in the family business and had not followed his family’s tradition. Another relationship that was destroyed was of friendship between Michael and Fabrizio, it was destroyed by how Fabrizio betrayed Michael by attempting to kill him which lead to the death of Apollonia, had Michael never done dirty work for the family, Fabrizio’s betrayal would have been highly unlikely since he would have no
