Set in the late 1940s in Long Island, New York, The Godfather tells the story of The Corleone, a Sicilian mafia family. The patriarch, Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) or known as "godfather" or "don," already has four adult children, three sons and a daughter, Sonny (James Caan), Fredo (John Cazale), Michael (Al Pacino) and Connie (Talia Shire). It is Connie’s wedding day with Vito’s new son-in-law, Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo). They are about to take a family photo, until Vito realizes that Michael has not coming. Michael is the only son who seems reluctant to be involved in their family matters. Solozzo is backed up by the two other crime families, The Barzinis and Tattaglias, but he needs Vito’s protection and financing too. In meeting with Sollozzo, Vito declines Sollozzo’s request, expressing Vito’s distaste towards drug trafficking business. It doesn't take long until the whole situation turns ugly. Two hit men are sent to assassinate Vito while he shops at a fruit market. However, Vito survives albeit badly hurt, leaving his first son, Sonny to take control of the family business for the time being. Having seen the news on newspaper, Michael tries to protect his father by visiting him in the hospital. Upon his arrival, he discovers that all the guards that should have protected his father are gone, leaving his father vulnerable to another assassination attempt. Michael instinctively hides his father and stands guard outside, pretending he has a gun to scare off the assassins. Not long after that, Solozzo’s bodyguard, a bunch of cop, headed by Captain McCluskey arrests Michael and even punches him.
