In the beginning of The Good Earth, a man named Wang Lung, and his father were living together. They were both poor farmers living in China. Wang Lung is at the time in his life where he must find a wife. He goes to the Hwangs House to see if they had a slave that he could marry. He did not want to marry a beautiful women, and his only request was that she does not have pockmarks and split upper lip. He feared marrying a beautiful women becaused he assumed that she would expect much from him and would have already lost her virginity. She helped Wang- Lung on the fields and made their family clothing. Later on, she revealed she was pregnant with their first baby.Wang Lung was thrilled. O-Lan expressed that she would not like having anyone by her side in labor. She wanted to wait until the baby was born to show the Old Mistress of the Hwang House. They were all pleased when they found out it was a baby boy. Soon after, Wang Lung purchased red sugar for his wife and child, fifty eggs and painted them red, and lastly he got incense for the gods. After giving birth, O-Lan went straight back to working in the fields. As they worked in the fields, they knew that people would pay higher prices for grain in the winter, so they began to save the silver they have earned in a hole in the wall. For their son’s one month anniversary, they held a celebration with red boiled eggs. As the new year approached, Wang Lung bought red squares of paper, which represented his joy, wealth and good year. As O-Lan went inside to see the Old Mistress, Wang Lung waited patiently outside. When she came back outside she mentioned to Wang Lung how no one in the Hwang House were in such nice or new clothing like they were. She suspected that they may not be as wealthy as they used to be. Wang Lung rejoiced in hearing this, but was afraid that evil spirits would take his healthy boy so he lied out loud saying that he had a baby girl with smallpox and that it is terrible. O-Lan also tells him that the Hwang family will have to sell some of their land. Wang Lung plans on buying some of it then. Wang Lung was eager to purchase the land, so he bribed the agent. At first, O-Lan was unsure if it was a good idea to buy the land, but then she changed her mind. When they purchased the land, they began to work harder on the fields. Later on, O-Lan announced that she was pregnant again, but Wang Lung did not react well. He was upset because he thought that she would be unable to work during the harvest season.
