The disciples were subject to much persecution from the Jewish hierarchy, Roman rule and even from those that profited from pagan rituals. After the ascension of Christ the disciples carried forward with the spreading of the Gospel of Christ and in doing so they endured many faith trying scenarios. Not only were the disciples tried but all believers, to some extent, worshiped with not only joy and excitement but with a certain amount of fear. The disciples being instructed by the powers to be not to teach in Christ’s name, chose to continue in disobedience to men for the furtherance of the Gospel, and this to some extent was against the teachings of Christ. These are just a few that we will look at for the supporting of obedience to rulers and civil laws. Romans 13:1-2,”Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation”. The scripture here is clear that “every soul” has a duty as a Christian to obey the higher powers, this is not only referencing God but the powers that God has established in which one is civil law and rule. As one continues to read the scripture we find a consistent message of civil obedience, Romans 13:5, “Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake”. One of the characters of Christianity is to be good citizens, in other words the Christian should walk in not only the love of God but as a law abiding ambassador of the kingdom of God. Luke 4:18, Ephesians 6:19-20, Acts 5:32, these scriptures are just a few that justifies the actions of the disciples. Paul writes “and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak”. The very reason for the calling of the disciples were to learn at the feet of Christ and then after his ascension they were to be the vessels used for the spreading of this gospel. Acts 5:32, “And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him”. The disciples were actual witnesses of Christ and all of his miracles, words, compassion, and ascension. For this cause were they called and existed, for the furtherance of the gospel. We would like to look briefly at Luke 4:18-19, “The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord”.
