This book is perfect example of the gothic gender which bloomed in Europe during 19th century. It contains every elements of a Gothic novel: mystery, drama, suspense and the plot is often center towards the existence of a powerful secret. Moreover Gothic novels frequently explore the human psyche and supernatural phenomenon such as this novel does. It also mingle the elements of horror stories with Romanticism’s elements. Stevenson lived and wrote during the Victorian era thus the story is set at that time. The Victorian society was full of society code and very focused on the appearances. Even though the author doesn’t bother to describe the society itself at that time we can see the different characteristics of it through the different
