The Great Daisy
“Can’t repeat the past?...why of course you can!” This is a well known quote from Mr. Gatsby in Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. In this mid-1920s book there are four main characters: Tom, Daisy, Gatsby, and Nick. Tom and Daisy are the old money folks of East Egg while Jay Gatsby is the new money located across the bay in West Egg. In this ellagant story there are multiple conflicts on how to live life and who to love, but in the end the old money always saves the reckless people and when the bad people win the hope dies. Throughout time, history repeats itself and Daisy’s family is still materialistic and concerned about their social status.
In the novel Daisy is depicted as a shallow individual who is only concerned about objects and materials. Here the readers do not feel sympathetic towards Daisy because she lacks the basic human morals. Also in the book it was never stated that Daisy was crying because of the life she could have had with Jay Gatsby, it only says, “It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such--such beautiful shirts before” (“The Great Gatsby Quotes by F. However, this is only one similarity compared to the few differences. In the movie Daisy is seen as less shallow and she has a sweeter voice that does not ring with money. This is simply because the director wanted the viewers to feel more sympathetic. Also the director wanted the people watching to see the reason that Gatsby fell in love with Daisy. This is shown when Nick narrates that Daisy was scared to express her feelings to Gatsby and instead she says she was crying because of the nicely folded pretty
