Excellently directed and exceptionally performed by Denzel Washington, “The Great Debaters” shines an authentic light on the social and political trials of African Americans in the Jim Crow South of the 1930s. However, with trial comes triumph as Wiley College gains momentum with its nationally successful debate team. Arguably the most memorable point made by Professor Tolson (Denzel Washington), is his stance on how to crush racism and discrimination. He urges his students that it is necessary for them to build up a strong mind - the opposite of what manipulative slave owners had ensured on their plantations just years before. In contrast, the suits and dresses worn during debates or at school, help to emphasize the student 's own wishes to get an education and better themselves in order to step up in society. This subtle touch adds yet another layer, that if detected, reveals segregation in all aspects of life. In my opinion, no movie would be successful without a historically accurate and seemingly imperceivable soundtrack. After all, music is meant to compliment and not overpower a scene (unless that is it’s intention). The soundtrack of, “The Great Debaters” creates the correct mood and features music that showcases African American musical influences rising to popularity in the 30s including genres like blues, jazz, and soul, which also played (pun intended) a vital role in breaking down the walls of racism in America. All things considered, “The Great Debaters” is an inspiring story of underdogs who rise to the occasion and prove all critics wrong. From the classrooms of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas to a debate win against Harvard University, this film not only portrays the truths of the segregated South, but also touches upon other social movements like the Women’s Rights Movement. The heart-warming (and at times hair-pulling) scenes build a strong connection between the main characters and audience.
