The Great Depression was a time of struggle and adaptation. During the Great Depression society was willing to do anything possible to earn the slightest bit of money. Since most jobs had shut down people conceived jobs of their own. For example, some people would paint homes for the span of five dollars. Neighbors would cut one another's hair to earn money to pay for their necessities. Since there was no dependable income, families cut back on everything possible. As jobs shut down society needed to compromise. The usage of daily items got replaced by things they were able to obtain in their home. The responsibilities of the bills were left to the Mothers. Families chose to limit their electricity bill to one dollar a month by decreasing the usage of lighting only while cooking and when needed. Children would complete their homework by windows or while their parents were cooking. Families used a specific item for a variety of different things. For example, cotton cloth was used as a cleaning cloth for practically everything. They were used for making bandages, quilt pieces, kite tails or to tie boxes and paper together. …show more content…

Farmers were unable to make an income because people were saving their money causing crops to die out due to the overproduction of crops. In 1932 when Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected he promised to start a “ New Deal'' for Americans. Roosevelt and Hoover differed in the fact that Hoover felt that the public should support the government and not vice versa. However, Roosevelt felt it was the federal government’s duty to help the American people through this tough time.
