Scott Fitzgerald’s, “The Great Gatsby”, is a very striking and compelling conclusion to a story that showcases multiple themes such as love, power, and wealth. As readers edge closer and closer to the conclusion of the novel, paragraphs filled with significant importance and deeper insight of the story and characters begin to arise. With stories having the ability to be interpreted in many different ways “The Great Gatsby” can be interpreted similarly by many readers, giving it its trademark name as “The Great American Novel”. He concludes his account with the words, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” (109) Meaning that life moves on, the events of today and tomorrow will slowly and certainly drift right out into the past. This speaks significantly to the entire novel, presenting countless themes that Fitzgerald showcases throughout the entire novel. One being the past. The novel presents readers with countless characters who are possessed by the past. For example, Gatsby’s undoubted obsession with Daisy. He believes he is destined to relive this past that believes was perfect and sinless. A marriage that is affected by infidelity and dejection. They are clouded by a past they cannot let go, toying with one another’s hearts leaving them in states of despair and need.
