I have learned many different things about the Pursuit of Happiness through our exploration of American Literature this school year. Three pieces of literature that helped my knowledge on the Pursuit of Happiness were The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck, and “And Ain’t I a Woman” written by Sojourner Truth. Each one of these pieces of literature gave me a new perspective of happiness. The Great Gatsby taught me that to be happy, you should never dwell on your past. Of Mice and Men taught me about the value and importance of friendship. “And Ain’t I a Woman” taught me that sticking up for what you believe in is the key to happiness. Although being written in the early 1900s, it has many important life lessons about happiness that can be useful today throughout the story. Throughout this piece of literature, most of the characters try to recreate the past, “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (ch. All throughout the story, Gatsby knows he still loves Daisy and Daisy loves Gatsby, yet she also loves the man that she had married, Tom. Gatsby revolves his life around his love for Daisy even though he can never have her, “Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!” (ch. 6). I have learned from this story that to be happy, you can’t spend your life dwelling on what has happened in the past and letting it get to you like it did
