People will do anything to get another person's attention. Born in Saint Paul, MN, Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was an American novelist, essayist, and short story writer who wrote and published The Great Gatsby. The novel is about a group of people who live a lavish lifestyle that is split between the East and West egg. The east egg is old money, and the West egg is new money. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses Jay Gatsby's character to show and help readers understand how he is still in love with his ex-lover Daisy Buchanan and is willing to recapture his past with her.
Jay Gatsby is a young, successful man with a lot of money, but nobody knows where it came from. While he and his ex-love Daisy are not together anymore, he misses her dearly. They ended once Gatsby had to leave for the Army, and they never returned together. Gatsby throws unbelievable luxurious parties that are so luxurious he also has his Rolls Royce parked outside. The author states, "'Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay'" (85). He threw these parties so that Daisy would recognize him. Gatsby lacked a luxurious life when he was with Daisy, so he made sure he would have the money to impress her if he ever got another chance with her. Fitzgerald says, "'They're such beautiful shirts,' she sobbed, her voice muf-fled in the thick folds. 'It makes me sad because I've never seen such—such beautiful shirts before'" (99). He was trying so hard to impress her and let her know that now he had everything she could ever want. The author states, "He hadn't once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes" (98).
