The protagonist of the novel is Nick Carraway and as I mentioned before he is also the narrator of the novel. Carraway is a young man who after studying at Yale University decides to move to New York City to learn about the bond business. After arriving to Long Island he buys a home in a rich neighborhood and is now neighbors with the Great Gatsby. Jay Gatsby, who is the main protagonist, is a young wealthy man who is dishonest and vulgar. He lives in a huge mansion next to Nick Carraway who later in the novel becomes close friends. Jay Gatsby is known throughout West Egg for his luxurious parties he gives to the public every Saturday night. Gatsby is a man who is used to getting what he wants and is willing to do anything to win Daisy, but in the end Daisy rejects him.
SETTING:
The setting of the novel is around the summer of 1922 in Long Island, New York. Fitzgerald divides Long Island as the East Egg and West Egg, which are where the main characters live. Nick Carraway disapproves of Gatsby`s behavior majority of the time. Carraway disapproves how Gatsby uses his money to gain affection of the upper-class society and his behavior toward women. Carraway also seems to admire Gatsby for his triumph and his life style and says is in a sentimental manner.
THEME:
The theme to me is the hypocrisy of society back in the 1920, but it also reflects on our society we have today. Hypocrisy because Gatsby does thing for his own gain: his selfish he throws lavish parties Saturday nights for his own personal gain and to get the attention of the upper-class society. It’s not only Gatsby, but the society as well they only care about partying and getting wasted at a mansion where they don’t even know the person. This also represents to our society today; our generation today is very brutal and just don’t care what they say or do; they do it for their own benefit.
