There Is Always Room for Change Imagine if you had a bad habit of lying, or maybe you can’t get to work on time. That habit can cause you problems at times. Your boss fires you, and you lie to your family to cover it all up. Eventually you will need money, and have to tell them that you really got fired. Then they don’t help you because you lied, but what if you could change all of that. What if you change your habits and get another job, and tell your family about it. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby," the character development of Jay Gatsby, illustrates the idea that people can change over time. At the beginning of the novel, Gatsby is mysterious and wealthy. He is obsessed with winning back his “true” love, Daisy. However, as the story progresses, he begins to realize that his image of Daisy is not entirely accurate, and that their relationship cannot be the same as it was before. In chapter seven Tom and Gatsby get into an argument over Daisy. Gatsby begins to claim that Daisy never loved Tom, but everyone in the room knew that was not true. During the argument Daisy says, “Oh, you want too much! I love you now-isn’t that enough? I can’t help what’s past” (132). Then she goes on to say, “I did love him once, but I loved you too” (132). Gatsby’s eyes then opened and closed. He said, “You loved me too?” (132). Gatsby comes to the realization that Daisy does not feel the same way as she did before. He understands that she is not the same girl he once met, and that it may be a time for him to change as well. He had troubles changing his habits because he was stuck in the past, but towards the end of the novel he changes those: closing his gate, taking a swim, and pounding
