The reunion of Daisy and Gatsby sets all the following events into inevitable motion. Chapter seven reveals that the story of their romance reaches its climax and its tragic conclusion. The fact that Daisy invites Gatsby to her house, considering the fact that Tom is also there, was a very foolish move. The confrontation between Gatsby and Tom serves to reveal the major flaws and motivations of both characters. Tom’s conceitedness causes him to believe that his wife will never leave him because of his wealth and high social status.
Gatsby wants everything to be perfect for his and Daisy’s reunion; he gets Nick’s lawn cut, buys her a great deal of flowers, and makes sure that every room is spotless. Daisy soon realizes that she could receive anything from Gatsby, but she still had to worry about Tom. Only in love for the money, Daisy begins to push Tom away to attain her goal. At one of Gatsby’s parties, she gives Tom permission to go have fun with other women: ‘“And if you want to take down any addresses here’s my little gold pencil’” (105). When Gatsby’s name is brought up Daisy becomes uncharacteristically outspoken, “‘Gatsby?’ demanded Daisy. ‘What Gatsby?’”(page 14) this is foreshadowing of a preexisting relationship between Daisy and Gatsby. Furthermore, When the four sit down to dinner their conversation shows how prejudice and hypocritical Tom is. First, get a phone call that he answers from his mistress.
They get bored at Daisy and Tom’s, so they decide to go into town. After they pull up into town, they end up in a suite at the Plaza hotel in an attempt to cool off a little. The tensions between Gatsby and Tom begin to rise even more than they already had when Tom accuses Gatsby of lying about being an Oxford man. Gatsby defends himself and declares that he was at Oxford, but only for a few months. Later, Gatsby starts to force Daisy to choose between himself and Tom.
Tom sparks conflict when the group go into town, causing Gatsby’s past to be revealed and an argument with Tom over Daisy. “I suppose the latest thing to do is to let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife.” “I found out what your ‘drug stores’ were.” As Gatsby tries to persuade Daisy to tell Tom she never loved him, Tom reveals some information about Gatsby’s past.
On a hot day in Long Island, Daisy suggests to Gatsby that the two should go to New York City for the day. Tom over hears the two talking about it and suggests that they all go including Jordan and Nick. While in the city Tom and Jay argue about how Jay is trying to steal his wife but during the altercation Daisy gets closer and closer to Tom after observing the intense quarrel. After a fun day in the city, the “friends” head home. While on the way back Daisy drives Tom’s car.
When Gatsby demands Daisy to tell Tom
Tom and Gatsby began to fight over Daisy’s affection when Gatsby pressures Daisy into admitting her love for him, “There, Jay,” said--but her hand as she tried to light a cigarette was trembling.” (132) Gatsby raises his voice and targets the person he loves. He is no longer the kind man she knew. Later, Tom tries to discredit Gatsby’s name and brings up Gatsby’s bootlegging business and secrets which are threatening. Tom noted, “That drug-store business was just small change,” continued Tom slowly, “but you have something on now that Walter’s afraid to tell me about.”
On the way home from the hotel, Daisy, driving Gatsby's car, hits Tom's mistress, Myrtle. Gatsby says he'll take the blame for the death of Myrtle, therefore Daisy doesn't have to be arrested. Tom finds out and tells George Wilson, the husband of Myrtle. Enraged with the death of his wife, George shoots Gatsby in the pool. In the next chapter, Tom tells Nick one day passing by, "'That fellow had it coming to him.
Nick, Gatsby, and Jordan are invited to lunch at the Bucannons. The whole evening, Tom watches Daisy and Gatsby exchange loving looks. Just before they decide to go into the city, Daisy says to Gatsby, “You always look so cool.” (119) When Daisy says this, Tom realizes what is going on between her and Gatsby. This encounter later causes the fight between Gatsby and Tom and eventually
Daisy is blissfully ignorant to this. She is at a constant tug-of-war between her feelings for Gatsby and Tom, but she loves the both of them for all the wrong reasons. Daisy believes that she loves Tom when really; she is in love with the idea of having a wealthy, well-bodied man in her life. It is a well-known fact that Tom has cheated on Daisy an unfathomable number of times, but Daisy tries to block this out of her mind by attempting to keep track of his every move. Nick expands on this idea by retorting, “If he left the room for a minute she’d look around uneasily, and say: "Where's Tom gone?" and wear the most abstracted expression until she saw him coming in the door” (Fitzgerald 143).
His mouth opened a little, and he looked back at Gatsby, and then back at Daisy as if he just recognized her as someone he knew a long time ago.” (119) Tom's feelings about Gatsby were established before this affair. He has had previous insecurities revolving around Gatsby and his wife, way back when the first two knew each other. The two similarities showed as a threat to Tom, especially their similarity in wealth. Tom seems to rebut this by insulting Gatsby's lack of background, which is a tactic to ruin his image in Daisy's eyes.
Soon Gatsby and nick became friends that would meet everyday and talk. At one point Gatsby and daisy sneak off without anyone noticing. Soon daisy and the Gatsby fall for each other but her husband tom kind of figured out what was going on between them. After spending a night with that Gatsby they all return home to see that their home has been flipped upside down by gang members looking for cigarettes and money, daisy and tom get worried that maybe they weren't just looking for that so they leave on a “vacation”. Later on the gatsbys brother was killed and his father was trying to figure out where to bury him and Gatsby said up east because that was where they had the best memories.at the funeral there were only a few people who attended.
