In late July, Gatsby invites nick to lunch. On the way into the city, Gatsby tells Nick about his life to put odd rumors to rest. After gaining Nick’s trust the two of them go to lunch, where Gatsby introduces Nick to Meyer Wolfsheim. Gatsby reveals to Nick that Mr. Wolfsheim fixed the World Series in 1919 and takes part in many other illegal activities. After meeting Mr. Wolfsheim, Nick goes to say hello to Tom, and introduces Gatsby to him. After learning that Tom is Daisy’s husband, Gatsby disappears. After lunch, Nick meets Jordan Baker for tea, where she recounts the history that Gatsby and Daisy share. On the hottest day of the summer, it is finally revealed to Tom that Gatsby and Daisy are in the middle of an affair. While Tom is shaking in silent rage, the five of them decided to take a trip to the city, with Gatsby and Daisy driving Tom’s car and Nick, Jordan, and Tom driving Gatsby’s car. While getting gas at Wilson’s shop, Wilson reveals to Tom that Myrtle is having an affair with an unknown man, and as a result they are moving to California. Once in the city, the group decides to rent a room at the Plaza Hotel. In their suite Gatsby reveals that he didn’t graduate from Oxford, but rather only attended for five months, shocking everyone. Tom then confronts Gatsby about his affair with Daisy, to which Gatsby responds with the claim that Daisy only married Tom because Gatsby was too poor at the time. Daisy refutes this statement, saying that she loves both Tom and Gatsby. To regain Daisy’s allegiance, Tom reveals the illegal dealings that Gatsby has been a part of, causing Daisy to turn against Gatsby. Just to add salt to the wound, Tom sends Daisy home with Gatsby, while Nick remembers that it is his 30th
