The second half of The Great Gatsby begins with a description of Gatsby’s background and history. He went to the college of St. Olaf’s but dropped out shortly after he admitted. After Gatsby left school he obtained a job working on Lake Superior collecting clams and salmon. He saved a man named Dan Cody from a storm and Cody was so thankful that he took Gatsby in and they traveled together. This is when Gatsby realized his desire for wealth and luxury and after this point he dedicated himself to becoming a successful man. Gatsby arrived at his home one day to find Tom and the Sloans riding horses near his home. Tom and Gatsby got into a dispute over their money which upsets Daisy, so Tom and Daisy left the party early. Gatsby was frustrated and believed that he could get Daisy’s love back with his money even though she was still with Tom. Later, Tom has Nick, Gatsby and Jordan over for lunch. After a while Tom gets annoyed with the way Gatsby and Daisy are acting towards each other, so he decides they are all going to go into town together. When they arrive in New York Tom confronts Gatsby on the issues of him lying about going to Oxford and what he plans to due with Daisy. Tom points out flaws and beats Gatsby and thinks he has won Daisy over. On the way back to their homes, Tom, Nick, and Jordan find out Mrs. Wilson has been hit and killed by a car. It turned out to be Daisy who was driving Gatsby’s car and accidentally hit her. A couple days later, Gatsby is swimming in his pool before his gardener closed it up for the season. Mr. Wilson found where gatsby lived and shot him and himself. Nick tried to have a funeral for Gatsby, but most of Gatsby’s friends including Tom and Daisy had deserted or disappeared.
