This chapter begins with Nick explaining that he couldn't sleep last night and when he woke up he heard the sound of a taxi pulling into Gatsby’s driveway. He got up and prepared himself to go over to his mansion to see him. He went to his house and saw that the front door was still open. Gatsby explained that nothing has happened. Nick then tells Gatsby that he should go away for a little while because they might trace his car. Gatsby then told Nick that he couldn’t leave because he wanted to stay close to Daisy. Gatsby then goes on to explain when he first had met Daisy and how he tried to get her to notice him. Gatsby explained that he loved Daisy for her youth, wealth and her popularity. Gatsby knew that she was extraordinary and someone that he wanted to be with forever and have a strong bond with. He explains how she promised to wait for him until he got back from the war. Before Gatsby had returned Daisy had married Tom because he was at her parents standards for her. Tom also had the approval of her parents to marry her. Gatsby adds that he feels that Daisy never really loved Tom. One of Gatsby's former gardeners told Gatsby that he was going to drain the pool tomorrow because the weather had changed and he didn’t want the leaves clogging up the pool drains. Gatsby told him to wait one more day because he hadn’t used the pool yet and wanted to use it once. Nick had to leave for work and as he left he told Gatsby that he would call him later and then Gatsby said that he was going to call Daisy. As he walks away he shouts that Gatsby is worth more than the Buchanans and all of their friends put together because they are a “rotten crowd”.
