Nick Carraway, the narrator and former WWI soldier, moved east and decided to become a bond trader on Wall Street in 1922. Nick’s apartment is between several mansions, including the mansions of his neighbor Jay Gatsby and his cousin Daisy Buchanan. Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan invite Nick over for dinner, who haven’t seen Nick since before the war. Nick notices that Tom has the same aggressive and racist personality as when they went to college together, and is more interested to hear about sweet Daisy’s life. One day, Nick takes a train to New York with Tom and his mistress Myrtle Wilson (both are cheating on each other’s spouses). Everyone in New York knows about Tom and Myrtle, and Tom keeps a secret apartment only for them. That day, they have an illegal liquor-filled party with Nick and a few other guests. During the party, Tom and Myrtle have an argument about Daisy, and Tom punches Myrtle in the nose, breaking it.

Most people create rumors about where Gatsby’s money is from, because he was originally raised in a poor family. As Nick wanders the house to find the host, he meets a familiar man that fought alongside him in the war. He discovers this mysterious man is the host himself, Jay Gatsby. Nick and Gatsby instantly become friends. They go to lunch one day, where Gatsby tells him his personal history. He finds out that Gatsby has a major crush on Daisy for the past five years, and how he only bought his mansion to impress and be close to
